The handle diameter is 24 mm and the shinai has a length of 38 mm (approx. 117 cm) and weighs well over 440 g. The main advantage of a short handle is not the arm length or hand size - the real advantage is the fast turning movement made possible by the short distance between the hands.
In addition, the balance of the shinai changes drastically: the first bamboo knot moves closer to the tsuka, which brings the centre of gravity closer to the hands and makes the shinai appear even lighter.
